What began in 1993 as a Bible study in Rancho San Diego, California, has now grown to an exciting and thriving church of 2,300 people - worshipping together, learning together, connecting with each other and growing closer to Christ. February 1993

Easter 1993

Our first Sunday service was held on Easter. 350 adults and 100 children showed up for the service, which took place in the parking lot of the RSD Shopping Center.

On February 18th, Mike & Laurie Burns met with another couple to pray in an empty storefront in East County about beginning a church. A week later, thirty-five people attended a Bible study in the Plaza Rancho San Diego Shopping Center.

One service wasn't enough room for our attendance, so we moved to two services - averaging 280 people every Sunday. Also, we held our first public baptism in Mission Bay...many more would follow.

Following Easter, we held our first regular Sunday service at the RSD Shopping Center. 150 people attended - twice as many as had been attending the Thursday night Bible studies.

Only six months after we started the church, we had to move our weekend services to Monte Vista High School for more room. We set up and took down all the chairs, stage and sound equipment every Sunday morning.

We held our second Easter outreach on the football field of Monte Vista High School. Only a year after we had began, our church was growing and thriving.

We moved back to the RSD Shopping Center - this time, in to a much larger storefront. We also held our first Family Fall Festival, a great night for families in our community. Our 2nd Christmas Eve Outreach saw 1,000 people in attendance.

We continued to grow - over 1,700 people visited us for our 3rd Easter Outreach. Over 900 people began to attend regularly at our weekend services.

Our location in RSD proved to be too small for our growing church. In February, we began construction on a new facility in La Mesa. We held our Easter Outreach in the uncompleted Worship Center - 3,400 people attended.

The grand opening of our new facility at 8363 Center Drive was June 15, 1997 - complete with a new worship center, children's classrooms and a fellowship center.

In 1998, we changed our name to Journey Community Church. Over the years, we expanded our facilities to create space for our various ministries. By our ten-year anniversary, we were averaging 2,100 people attending three weekend services.

Again, we needed more room. In November 2005, we completed an extensive expanision and remodel of our worship center - allowing for 1,400 seats.

We were given the opportunity to purchase the shopping center in which we leased space. In June, we closed the deal and now own the property located at 8363 Center Dr. Click here to read more about Journey Up.
